Following recent events surrounding the Anglo-Swedish vaccine, the president of the Campania region, Vincenzo De Luca, has announced the suspension of Astrazeneca vaccinations for individuals under 60 years of age. This includes halting second doses for this age group. During his regular Friday Facebook live stream, De Luca criticized the national vaccine distribution system, deeming it inconsistent and inadequate. He highlighted the ongoing controversy surrounding Astrazeneca, particularly after the death of an 18-year-old in Liguria. De Luca questioned the confusing and contradictory guidance on the vaccine’s use, emphasizing the lack of clear directives from national authorities regarding second doses for those under 60 who have already received their first Astrazeneca shot. He stated that Campania will independently proceed, administering second doses of Astrazeneca only to those over 60, while awaiting further clarification from the government and the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA). Despite concerns about reaching herd immunity targets in Naples and other major cities by July, De Luca confirmed Campania’s transition to the “white zone” (lowest risk level) from June 21st. He urged those aged 30-59 to get vaccinated to ensure the region remains Covid-free. He praised the efficiency of Campania’s vaccination centers and noted a recent decrease in positive cases.
