Campania’s Impending Red Zone: A Surge in COVID-19 Cases

The Campania region, under Governor De Luca’s administration, is poised to enter a stricter lockdown phase, with official confirmation imminent. A significant rise in infections across Italy saw 40,902 new COVID-19 cases reported nationwide, alongside 550 fatalities. Hospitalizations, however, remain relatively stable. The Campania regional crisis unit’s daily report indicates a slight uptick in both new cases and tests performed. 4,079 individuals tested positive (compared to 4,065 the previous day) from 25,510 tests (23,840 the day before). Of these, 509 exhibited symptoms, while 3,570 were asymptomatic. Recoveries also increased, with 878 individuals (645 the previous day) declared virus-free. Regrettably, 40 additional deaths were recorded (31 the previous day), occurring between November 7th and 12th. In terms of hospital capacity, 183 patients (192 the previous day) occupy intensive care beds (of 656 available), following a rise of 66 patients. General ward occupancy stands at 2,153 patients (1,944 the previous day) out of 3,160 available beds. Nationally, the increase in positive cases continues, alongside a rise in testing. The figures reveal 40,902 newly confirmed infections (37,968 the day before), from 254,908 tests, representing a 20,236 test increase compared to the 234,672 tests conducted the previous day. The positivity rate shows a slight decrease to 16.04%. The total number of active cases stands at 635,054. Sadly, 550 deaths (636 the day before) were reported within the past 24 hours, alongside 11,480 recoveries (15,645 the previous day). The rate of hospitalization increases has slowed. Currently, 30,914 patients are hospitalized with symptoms (a 1,041 increase from the previous day’s 518), while 3,230 critically ill patients are in intensive care (a 60-patient increase compared to yesterday’s 89). This data emerges on a pivotal day regarding regional classification adjustments: Toscana and Campania are anticipated to be designated red zones, while Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and Marche are expected to be designated orange zones. These measures are slated to come into effect from Sunday, November 15th, pending official confirmation.
